Digital Sigilization
The “sentient symbolism” of internet memes allows for this material to function as sigils, and like sigils, serve as glyphs of desire. Both sigils and memes are formations of symbol and language, carefully affixed and layered. Occult author Ray Sherwin describes sigilization in the following:
“The magician acknowledges a desire, he lists the appropriate symbols and arranges them into an easily visualised [sic] glyph. Using any of the gnostic techniques he reifies the sigil and then, by force of will, hurls it into his subconscious from where the sigil can begin to work unencumbered by desire.”
Internet memes are the digital sigilization of desire, which through compulsive, ecstatic fixation, transform into obsession, which can then manifest results. Internet meme-making provides a rare opportunity for an individual to practice uncontrolled, boundless mimesis. If power is harnessed under the correct set of circumstances, memes can in themselves be magic.
